Nintendo tried something new at E3 last year by ditching a traditional conference in favor of smaller shows and Nintendo Directs. Keeping with that tradition, Nintendo is taking a unique approach to this year’s E3 as well. In a partnership with popular YouTubers Mega64, Nintendo created this video (starring an android version of Reggie Fils-Aime named Reggie Fils-A-Mech) that explains a few of its E3 events. These events include the a Super Smash Bros. Invitational tournament in Los Angeles during E3, smaller Smash Bros. tournaments held at Best Buys all over the country, an E3 live stream by the people over at the Nintendo Treehouse during the show, and finally a “Nintendo Digital Event” at 9 AM PT on Tuesday, June 10 (which will presumably replace the company’s traditional conference).
Of all of these announcements, the Super Smash Bros. Invitational tournament has me the most excited. Nintendo says it will be inviting 16 highly skilled Smash Bros. players to duke it out in what will presumably be the game’s first major tournament. As someone who adores watching competitive Melee, I can’t wait to see who is invited. I can only hope that Nintendo takes it seriously and invite the world’s best Smasher’s instead of handpicking the ones it feels best suit its image. I also wonder how much time the players will be given to learn the game beforehand. But I digress. What do you think of these announcements? What are you looking forward to most?
