A 14 year ban on video game consoles, instituted back in the year 2000 in order to protect the youth of China against the supposed negative influence of video games, was lifted today.
Plans to lift the ban were announced as far back as October of last year as part of a new set of rules allowing the sale of foreign consoles as well as the introduction of streaming video and other entertainment services to the vastly populated country. Specifics of when and how the new regulations would be put in to place were vague at the time, but it seems the long dark night is over and the Chinese people will finally have access to that which we gamers hold nearest and dearest.
Gaining access to the world’s 3rd largest gaming market has already payed off for Nintendo as reports indicate that the company’s stock prices have risen 5 percent in Japan in the wake of the news.
