On December 19, Nintendo announced that it would hold a competition for the recently released eShop title NES Remix in which fans were encouraged to submit their fastest time for a particular level. Unfortunately, Nintendo has announced today that it is suspending the contest as it has discovered an exploit in the level that could lead to cheating.
“Unfortunately, we confirmed that there is a way to exploit the challenge and achieve a faster time. In the interest of being as fair as possible, we decided to terminate the event without recognizing the fastest time,” said game director Koichi Hayashida. “We sincerely apologize for this matter, particularly because the majority of people played fairly.”
The level in question is Remix Level 4, which tasks gamers with controlling two Mario characters at the same time while collecting coins. The cancellation certainly must come as a bit of a disappointment for fans that spent time trying to get a legitimate high score, though it is understandable why Nintendo would choose to suspend the contest.
