Issue 88: Broad Horizons

This week, we find new depths in old games.

There’s been a great influx of stuff round here lately. A rare interview with Bastion‘s narrator? Check. Somewhat spoilerific Skyward Sword podcasts? Check. Kinda silly but still fun Star Fox debates? Check, check, check. We got it all here at Nintendojo, and we hope you enjoy reading as much as we do writing.

But we admit it. On the Wii and DS front– especially on the DS front, oh boy– there’s just not that much going on. 3DS, well, that’s a different story– astoundingly good eShop games like Mutant Mudds certainly cheer us up, while Resident Evil: Revelations gorges on what will likely be millions of retail sales. But there’s still plenty of stuff to talk about in games that have gone by– like Pilotwings! (Shout-out to our illustrator, Mr. Mark Baggio!)

So what are we talking about here? This week, Katharine Byrne discusses just where all those parents are, whether it’s Crono’s dad or Baby Mario’s silhouetted ones. Meanwhile, Pierre Bienaimé plays a retro game so far in the closet we can’t tell you what it is yet (we’re secretive like that)– and next to him, Mel Turnquist pulls out some old Mario Kart games and yells about how much better such-and-such is than such-and-such. Andy Hoover will talk about the Evil Empire, yes, that Evil Empire, and Kevin Knezevic rounds it all out with something new coupled with something old in this week’s samurai-centric Star Road.

We’re true believers of the big N here at Nintendojo, and while we love talking about what’s new– especially in these fantastic times for eShop and 3DS– we also believe there’s deep abysses left unplumbed in the games of ages past. That’s what this week’s issue is for, and we hope you’ll love it.

Enjoy,
Andrew
