2. Gravity

Notable Games: Super Mario Galaxy series

Despite gravity being a given in pretty much every game ever, Nintendo proved that a slight change in implementation can make a world of difference when it released Super Mario Galaxy. It seems like a no brainer now but it took until 2007 for Mario to explore the depths of space in search of Princess Peach (actually I’m pretty sure he went to space in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, but that’s beside the point). Jumping from planet to planet and toying with the effects of gravity was a revelation to me when I first played the game, and each new galaxy I visited showed me new ways gravity could be twisted. Levels consisted of many tiny planets, each with their own gravity and ideas, often miniature levels in themselves. Galaxy is one of the few Mario games to get a numbered sequel, and although the team has since worked on different projects I hope to see it return to Galaxy again at some point, even if it’s just a nod in another title like Super Mario 3D World.
