Created and popularized in 1981 with the release of Nintendo’s arcade hit Donkey Kong, the platformer genre is one of the oldest and most varied genres in gaming. Originally recognizable by a few key features (notably, the ability to move around and jump between platforms in an attempt to reach a goal point), tons of platformers have been created over the years, giving us a wide range of crazy mechanics and unique experiences. The mechanics that interest me most are abilities that allow the player to go off the intended path and play in their own unique way, or level design that flips our expectations. It is hard to narrow so many awesome ideas down to such a small number, but here are 10 of the best mechanics in platforming games.
Top Ten: Platforming Game Mechanics
Sam counts down the top ten most influential mechanics in the genre.
