3) Cape Mario

First Appearance: Super Mario World (SNES, 1991)

Mario had already flown before in Super Mario Bros. 3, but it wasn’t until he got his cape in Super Mario World that the plumber truly soared. Of all Mario’s various costumes, none is as fondly remembered and sorely missed as this incredibly iconic look. The greatest hero in all of video games careening through the skies wearing a cape was befitting of the medium’s equivalent of Superman. It was also a great deal more versatile and fun to use than the Tanooki Tail, as along with flying and bopping enemies, Mario could also dive-bomb and glide for great distances. Cape Mario needs to make a comeback.
