1) Fierce Deity Link

First Appearance: The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (Nintendo 64, 2000)

Fierce Deity Link is the biggest tease in the history of video games. As great as Majora’s Mask is, it was arguably a downgrade to go from the exceptionally awesome adult version of Link in Ocarina of Time back to young Link for his trip to Termina. After playing through the entire game, defeating countless bosses and foes, and assembling all 23 masks, players were given one, final mask to wear: the Fierce Deity Mask. All that sweat and blood seemed validated upon receiving it, as suddenly Link was transformed into a ghostly, imposing version of his older self, garbed in a white tunic and wielding an enormous, double-helix sword. The catch? Fierce Deity Link could only be unleashed during boss battles. Such a letdown (though there is an in-game exploit that can let you glitch the character into the overworld), but even in snippets, Fierce Deity Link established himself as the best alternate take on a Nintendo character ever made. Now get him in another game already!
