6. Viewtiful Joe

While Wii ushered in a renaissance-era for side-scrolling games, the genre had all but been forgotten in the wake of 3D platformers like Super Mario 64. In 2003, Capcom’s magnificent Viewtiful Joe proved that the genre was still relevant with a title that combined old-school gameplay with modern-day cel-shaded visuals. Before New Super Mario Bros. brought Mario back to his roots, Capcom kept the 2D platformer alive with Viewtiful Joe and Mega Man Anniversary Collection.

As part of the now infamous Capcom Five, Viewtiful Joe gave Capcom a brand-new franchise character that has proven to be quite enduring. The character has starred in a number of sequels, and has even appeared as a playable fighter in the Wii fighting game Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.
