When Super Smash Bros. Brawl released on Wii, it brought with it a host of new additions to the franchise. One of those new additions, the Smash Ball, introduced the concept of Final Smashes, and we now have confirmation from director Masahiro Sakurai that both will be returning when Super Smash Bros. releases on Wii U and 3DS later this year. The outspoken developer took to Miiverse this morning to show us what the Smash Ball looks like in glorious high definition!
Super Smash Bros. Brawl was also the first game in the franchise to feature third party characters. While Mega Man and Sonic the Hedgehog have both been confirmed as playable characters, it appears that Solid Snake may not be rejoining the battle. During an interview with Twitch, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima said that Snake’s return is doubtful. That did not stop the legendary creator from petitioning Nintendo to change their mind, however.
“I’m not working on that game so I don’t know, but I don’t think that’s likely,” Kojima told Twitch. “Well, if Mr. Sakurai is watching this, please use Snake.”
Solid Snake’s disappearance would be unfortunate, but not unsurprising. The character has made very few appearances on Nintendo platforms as of late, with 2012’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D port being the last such title. Would you like to see Solid Snake return in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS? As always, let us know in the comments below!
I do wish Snake would make a return to Smash, especially if Kojima is keen on the idea, but he’s only got himself to blame if it doesn’t happen. (Well, himself and whoever makes the decisions at Konami, all of whom better damn well listen to Kojima!)
When Snake Eater came to 3DS, there was talk of releasing other Metal Gear games there as well, possibly even including MGS4. What happened? Who dropped that ball?
When MGS5 was announced, Snake used a crazy wrist-mounted projector/virtual-tablet thing that couldn’t look like a more obvious match for the Wii U gamepad if it tried. But are Ground Zeroes or Phantom Pain coming to Wii U? No. What the hell! Why?!
MSX games (like the very original Metal Gears) were supposed to appear on Virtual Console. Never happened. At least the NES port or the excellent GBC game could have shown up. But again, nothing.
So, no Metal Gear love for years on Nintendo, and now, months from the next Smash release, a tweet wishing Snake would be part of it? Come on. I mean, I know the guy’s been busy but jeez.
I’m not sure who’s worse; Nintendo for not asking Snake earlier, or Kojima waiting till the eleventh hour to tell Sakurai to use him…
