Did you know that Super Metroid turns 20 years old this Wednesday? That’s right, what is perhaps the greatest action platformer ever made reaches its second decade on March 19. And still, it remains as engaging as ever– the third Metroid game is an incredible achievement in game design. Samus is lost in an extensive labyrinth, but players can find their way through by following the invisible guiding force of the world. All this time later, Super Metroid remains the definitive game in its genre, and for good reason.
Let’s start the celebration with a great track from the game, the theme of Upper Brinstar. This jungle covered area is where the game first opens up for exploration in earnest. It’s one place Samus returns to again and again in order to get to other realms deep within planet Zebes.
What are your favorite tracks from the game? And will you be booting up Super Metroid again to celebrate its 20th birthday? You can play on both the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console. Of course, there’s always the old Super Nintendo cartridge. Future Metroid games built on the foundation of this SNES classic, but there’s nothing like going back to the game that perfected its craft.
Best game ever? Best game ever. Probably.
Now, now, are we really opening that can of worms? =) I love SM, but at the end of the day, it’s going to be a toss-up between Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Ocarina of Time (or Majora’s Mask, depending on my mood that day), for me.
I dunno about the greatest but has jumped up in my regard quite a bit since I really got a chance to play it back in 2005 or so, since I missed it back in the SNES’s heyday.
