Last week, the world lost one of the biggest fans of the Zelda franchise, Robin Williams. A fan of the series from the very beginning, Williams endeared himself to Zelda fans through a number of advertisements for the franchise over the years. With his passing just a week ago, fans have expressed a desire to see Williams immortalized in the series he dearly loved. In less than a week, over 110,000 fans signed a petition to see Robin Williams make a cameo in the next Legend of Zelda title. Nintendo released a statement about Williams’ death over the weekend, and even addressed the petition while doing so:
Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo. Our hearts go out to his entire family, and especially to Zelda Williams, who we’ve worked with multiple times.
We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honor him in a future game. We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close.
In a time when a family is still in mourning, and with quite a bit of time before The Legend of Zelda is scheduled to appear on Wii U, it might be a bit early to think about. Given Nintendo’s closeness with Zelda Williams, and the fact that it certainly seems open to the possibility, one could assume that it’s only a matter of time before an official announcement is made. You can find a link to the petition here. Interestingly enough, it won’t be the only title Williams appears in posthumously: Blizzard Software announced that Williams will appear in World of Warcraft, thanks to another fan petition.
