Earlier today, WayForward announced that its classic Game Boy Color game Shantae will be arriving in the 3DS eShop on June 20.
For those who may be unfamiliar with the title (or its DSiWare followup, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge), Shantae is an inventive platformer released at the tail end of the Game Boy Color’s life cycle. The game starts the eponymous Shantae, a half-genie who can transform into a number of different animals using magical dances.
Unlike the original title, which was only released in North America, the Virtual Console version of Shantae will also be available Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, making this the perfect opportunity for fans to catch up on the lost classic.
Will you be downloading Shantae when it hits the eShop? Let us know in the comments!

Ho-o-o-ly crap. Have you seen the prices the original Game Boy Color cartridge for Shantae is going for online? It’s not EarthBound levels of crazy, but the average is hovering around $160. It’s good to see it’s coming to 3DS. Looks like I’ll be getting this one on eShop and not on the original platform.
I’m curious enough about this game that I’ll probably buy the eShop release. But I’m more excited about Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons coming out later this month.
Second-hand prices have been ridiculous for a long time. It will be interesting to see if that market crashes once the game is widely available in a different format, or if collectors still appreciate the limited nature of the physical release.
Seriously, Nintendo. This is all part of your dastardly plot to make sure I have no money during the summer. Admit it! I have figured it out!
