We already know that Nintendo plans to show off a new 3D Mario game at this year’s E3, but if rumors are to be believed, the title may even be hitting stores as early as this October.

According to CVG, Nintendo will be rolling out a string of high-profile releases in the second half of 2013 to bolster the Wii U’s sluggish sales, which have missed the company’s initial projections by about two million units. The most notable of these is said to be the next 3D Mario title, which is expected to go on sale sometime in October.

While this is still merely a rumor at this point, it does certainly seem plausible; after all, Nintendo released the pair of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 during 2011’s holiday season to revitalize 3DS sales, and the company will be announcing the next installment of each at this year’s E3. Still, given the way it’s scheduled releases in the past, it seems more likely that the next Mario game, should it indeed be released this year, will be coming in November rather than October.

Regardless, even if we don’t get the next 3D Mario game this year, there are plenty of other Wii U titles slated for the second half of 2013; Game & Wario will be launching next month (at a budget price, no less), with Pikmin 3 following in early August. There’s also the HD remake of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker to look forward to this winter, not to mention The Wonderful 101, which has yet to be given a release date.

What do you make of the rumor? Do you think we’ll be seeing the next 3D Mario game before the end of the year? Share your theories in the comments section!

Here’s hoping for a true successor to Super Mario 64.

I’d be happy with Super Mario Galaxy 3. I’m in the minority but I’d also like to see a Super Mario Sunshine 2!

Super Mario Sunshine is a shining diamond of a game that’s been buried six feet under by the PR machine.

I’d be very happy if Nintendo started rereleasing GameCube games in HD for a knockdown price as Sony has been doing. Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, F-Zero X could all work well.

Mario U in October, Mario Kart U in December. That’s my guess!

This is a big pipe dream, but I’d love to see a 3D take on Super Mario 2. (You know, not the Japanese one. :^) I want to pluck and chuck veggies, visit a dark alternate reality, and ride around on enemies and flying carpets, and fight someone other than Bowser, with a selectable cast including quick Toad and floaty Peach in addition to the brothers.

…Not likely, I know. But a guy can visit Subcon. Er, dream.

Whatever’s in the works, I bet it’s great. It’s hard to imagine any 3D Mario not being excellent after Galaxy and 3D Land. I even enjoyed Sunshine, the most misunderstood of the 3D Marios. :^)
