Christmas came a little early for Mario fans this year, as Nintendo announced that a new batch of downloadable levels, inspired by classic Mario stages, will be coming to New Super Mario Bros. 2 today, free of charge.
In the most recent edition of Nintendo Direct, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that players who own a copy of New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be able to download the Golden Classics Pack, which will be free to purchase until January 31 (after which it will retail for 200 Yen, or $2.50 USD). Unlike previous Coin Rush add-ons, though, this new set of challenges will be an amalgam of levels drawn from the plumber’s earliest– and most influential– adventures. These levels include:
- Round 1 (Mario Bros.)
- Levels 1-1, 1-2, and 1-4 (Super Mario Bros.)
- Levels 1-1 and 1-5 (Super Mario Bros. 3)
The Golden Classics Pack goes live today around the world. An English version of the same Nintendo Direct presentation can be seen below.

I’m playing them now!
… I can’t say I’m super in-love with the first stage, though, the original Mario games were much more restrictive when it comes to the moves at Mario’s disposal. Now that Mario has lost and gained some abilities, the first stage feels kinda clunky….
I can see what you mean. I also don’t like how plain the backdrops are, but I suppose that was a conscious decision to keep them recognizable. Still, it’s nice to see these classic stages again; it really makes NSMB2, for all of the complaints people have about its lack of creativity, feel like a legitimate part of the series. Plus you can’t beat the price. :P
What a cool freebie! I just hope the DLC for NSMBU ends up being as good.
