Two weeks ago, Nintendo fulfilled the wishes of many a Zelda fan when it announced the oft rumored The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D. Details at the time were limited, but a recent Famitsu interview with series Producer Eiji Aonuma has shed a little more light on the development process and what to expect when the N64 classic returns in 2015.

The game is being built on a similar engine to Ocarina of Time 3D. As such, it will incorporate some of that game’s improvements when it arrives, particularly some of the added gyroscopic abilities. That won’t be the only game influencing Majora’s Mask 3D, however. The game will draw some inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds‘ touchscreen interface. The game will not sport any graphical improvements when played on the New 3DS, but there will be something added, though Nintendo remains mum on exactly what to expect. In regards to other new features, Aonuma did, however, let slip that a new fishing minigame has been added to the title.

“You’ll get to fish! Although… it makes you wonder whether you’ll have that free time to fish in the world of Majora’s Mask, so we’ve added fishing ponds. Two of them, too. There might be something monstrous you could fish out, so please look forward to it.”

While the game won’t be any easier than before, the developers are making certain changes to improve the overall game. One boss fight in particular will be revamped while the narrative will seek to make certain things a bit easier to understand this time around. Aonuma specifically pointed out that unexplained parts of the game’s story will be cleared up.

Do you plan on picking up The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D when it arrives next year? As usual, let us know in the comments below!

After the masterful job they did with OoT3D, I have nothing but confidence we’ll get the ultimate version of Majora’s Mask too. Fishing, a revamped boss and some more story details? Yes yes and yes please!

I remember talk of how the drag-n-drop inventory wasn’t done in Oot3D due to the 30fps framerate but worked perfectly at 60 for Link Between Worlds. Dare I dream of a stereoscopic, silky-smooth 60fps Majora’s Mask? As for New 3DS enhancement, I’m a little stumped. Amiibo? Wind Waker-style camera? A special edition console for the US as an apology for releasing the thing so unforgivably late? :^) Probably just extra assignable buttons, but a guy can dream…
