When Pokémon: The First Movie arrived in theaters back in 1999, it was a very big deal. With a giant set of Burger King toys, a comic book adaptation, a CD soundtrack and tons of other tie-ins, Pokémon: The First Movie received a multimedia push that helped solidify the franchise’s pop culture standing. After all, Pokémon had only been around in North America for about a year at that point! As a result, it’s no wonder most fans seem to hold it in high regard. Those same fans may be excited to know that the next Pokémon movie seems to be a remake to that film, entitled Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution!
The news had been rumored earlier this year, but this is the first official announcement. At this time, no other details have been given regarding Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. While this year’s animated film release was a bit ambiguous regarding its place in any sort of timeline, a remake of Mewtwo Strikes Back would likely position this film in the continuity of Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!, released in 2017. In that film, Brock and Misty were replaced by a new pair of characters named Verity and Sorrel. It will be interesting to see if the pair return for this remake, or if Ash’s original traveling companions will appear as they did in Pokémon: The First Movie.
Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will release in Japanese theaters July 12, 2019. As of this writing, a North American release has not been announced, but another Fathom Events release seems likely. Stay tuned to Nintendojo for more as it develops!
