With E3 quickly approaching, the hype has already started to build. At a recent meeting for Nintendo investors, company president Satoru Iwata told those in attendance that there will not be any new information regarding the Nintendo NX, the planned successor to the Wii U, at E3 this year. The company’s upcoming cell phone games will also be withheld from the show. We’ve mirrored the quote below.

“Incidentally, we’re getting various questions for this year’s E3, like ‘Won’t there be a NX announcement?’, ‘Will there be a presentation on smart devices?’, or ‘Will there be more on the quality of life platform?’ However, since we understand that E3 is an event for dedicated video game machines, we do not intend to discuss the smart devices as well as quality of life,” said Iwata.

While NX news is still a ways off, at the meeting, Iwata did reiterate that the console could bring an end to the controversial practice of region locking software. While his comments don’t offer anything definitive, it’s nice to see that the company is still looking into it:

“However, regarding NX, given the customer feedback and proposals from the market, while nothing has been decided yet, we’re currently investigating internally what problems there would be in realizing it,” said Iwata. “You can think of that as the current situation. I understand your desire, so I’d like to look at it optimistically going forward.”

Given that Wii U is still a fairly new system, it’s nice to see that the NX is likely a ways off. Some pundits may be quick to write-off Nintendo’s current console, but with titles like Star Fox, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and the next Legend of Zelda still on the way, it’s safe to say that the system’s best days are still ahead of it.
