Last year the organizers of Evo, the world’s premiere fighting game tournament, held a donation drive to decide what the tournament’s final game should be. Fans of Super Smash Bros. Melee managed to raise nearly $100,000 dollars to get the game into the tournament, and it would end up being the second most popular game of the tournament, behind Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. This year, the game returned to Evo, and once again the best players from all over the world showed up to face off. One of those players was Joseph “Mang0” Marquez, the previous year’s winner, who managed to earn himself the top spot once again, beating Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma in the grand finals. You can see that game (alongside the whole top eight) in this video from the livestream on Twitch.
I was so happy to see Super Smash Bros. Melee come back to Evo, not as a donation game but as one of the headliners. The game is nearly 15 years old now and still one of the best competitive fighting games around. If you want to see more professional Melee, be sure to check out videos from VGBootCamp.
