Tetris and Nintendo handhelds have been associated with one another since the launch of the original Game Boy. Before Pokémon Red and Blue conquered the world, Tetris was the system’s most beloved title. So when it was announced that a new version of the classic would appear as one of the Nintendo DS’ first Wi-Fi enabled titles, it came as little surprise. What gamers might not have expected, however, was the amount of fan service that Nintendo packed into the title. Not content to simply deliver the same old Tetris experience, Nintendo gave fans a nostalgia trip with sounds and visuals pulled from a number of classic NES titles. The resulting soundtrack featured a number of remixes that felt familiar, yet different at the same time.
To kick things off, the developers of Tetris DS chose one of NES’s most familiar tunes: the music from World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. What’s great about this track is that, despite its strong association with the original title, it also seems very fitting for a Tetris game. While one would think that placing Mario’s most famous song in a completely different genre wouldn’t work, the remix seems like a natural match for Tetris’ frantic style of gameplay. The rest of Tetris DS‘s soundtrack plays in a similar fashion, with faster-tempo remixes from Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, and more.
