3) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
Released: Wii, 2007
After two solid games, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock was when the series exploded into a phenomenon. Played with special plastic guitars, Guitar Hero III was the ultimate ode to rock. Boasting a setlist stacked with a virtual greatest hits of rock music across multiple decades, Guitar Hero III was also an unabashedly challenging game. It was easy to learn the simple color-coded button layout of the game’s guitar controller, but as the difficulty and speed increased, it became harder and harder to deal with the greater number of chords that popped up on the screen. Guitar Hero III changed the landscape of the video game industry for many years afterward, and remains one of the funnest entries in the series’ history.
I don’t really like music games… but have to admit this list has a lot of quality software on it.
My only complaints:
* Donkey Konga and Mario DDR were great ideas but Nintendo needed more remixed NES tracks and fewer public domain songs thrown into the mix
* Rock Band 2 should be replaced by The Beatles Rock Band (not because Rock Band 2 is bad, but because The Beatles version is just that awesome)
;)
