After a great amount of build up from sources both official and unofficial alike, Super Smash Bros. launched for 3DS in Japan on September 13. After long lines on release had cleared, one million copies of the game had been purchased– one for every 16 of the country’s 3DS systems, or 2 percent of the country’s households. Only three other 3DS games have gone platinum at launch: Pokémon X and Y, Monster Hunter 4, and Yo-Kai Watch 2: Head/Founder.
Strong sales are also expected in the West, where in addition to the 3DS game’s impending launch on October 2, a French retailer has reported a release date of November 21 for the Wii U version. Nintendo France has denied this, claiming the listed release date was a mistake. There is still no fixed release date for the home console version of the new game.
