1) Elite Beat Agents
Released: Nintendo DS, 2006
Commander Kahn and his crew of merrymakers remain unlike anything else yet seen in a music game. Elite Beat Agents wins on all fronts. First, its touch screen-based gameplay offered a ton of variety, with numerous ways to tap and sweep along to the music. The mechanics were so expertly implemented, it was addictive trying to repeatedly go for a better score. The music was equally enjoyable, a funky mixture of tunes that perfectly complimented the hijinks of the game’s characters. What sets this title above all other music games, however, is its eponymous agents. Each song is accompanied by a different mini-story, with the goal being to improve the characters’ lives in some way. Whether it was reuniting a girl with the spirit of a loved one or fending off a dragon, the antics of the trio were so ridiculous that players couldn’t help but be sucked right in. A lot of rhythm games have groove, but few have heart like Elite Beat Agents.
What do you think of our list? Is there a great music game that we neglected to mention? Let us know in the comments!
I don’t really like music games… but have to admit this list has a lot of quality software on it.
My only complaints:
* Donkey Konga and Mario DDR were great ideas but Nintendo needed more remixed NES tracks and fewer public domain songs thrown into the mix
* Rock Band 2 should be replaced by The Beatles Rock Band (not because Rock Band 2 is bad, but because The Beatles version is just that awesome)
;)
