10: Elite Beat Agents
“E…B…A. E…B…A…”
There are several moments in this quirky rhythm game that could be on this entry. I could have gone with the weather lady doing anything she could to to make sure her weekend with her son is fantastic, or the little girl wanting to see her daddy one last time (the only time “You’re the Inspiration” is not insufferable), or the ballplayer saving the little boy from supernatural monsters and finding his way back to the big leagues. There’s so much to choose from, but the very end is what takes the cake.
Earth has been invaded by the Rhombulans who want to destroy all things musical, and everyone’s been imprisoned. In an attempt to save the world, they decide to wreak havoc and cause a bit of a ruckus, but as the Elite Beat Agents try to protect them from the Rhombulans, they get turned to stone.
Now all really does seem lost. The Rhombulans have won. But then you hear a little voice calling out “E…B…A….”. It’s the little girl from the Christmas Gift episode. Soon, others begin to join in, and it’s not long before everybody is chanting for the agents, in a classic “Clap your hands if you believe!” kind of trope. It’s slightly corny, but it’s easily forgiven with the quirky nature of the game. Finally, the agents bust out and begin to perform a very fun and high energy edition of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”. Music lives, and the Rhombulans are defeated. The Agents’ work is done and all is well again.
What makes this moment work is how pumped and determined you are when you hear “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”, and it makes you want to beat those aliens once and for all. It’s hard to pick a more fitting song for this final chapter of awesomeness and my god, it just makes me want to fistpump the air and yell out “Music lives!!”
