1: Earthbound

“Only a few people will know of your amazing courage, but the number of people you save is immense.”

Honestly, did you really think I was going to make a list like this and NOT include something from the Mother series? You’re nuts!

In Earthbound, you play as Ness, a young boy gifted with psychic powers. Along the way you meet Paula, Jeff, and Prince Poo, three other kids who are similarly gifted. The four of you team up together to defeat Porky and the embodiment of evil, Giygas.

Don’t get me wrong– Giygas is pretty nightmarish. The sounds and the quotes from the battle are horrifying. They’re scary and you can’t do anything about it. You just watch as your souls are borderline raped. There’s no way you can defeat them, right? Well you know that little “Pray” option in Paula’s battle menu? Usually, it’s pretty useful, but this time it’s all you can do. As Ness, Jeff and Prince Poo heal and defend, Paula prays and prays.

And as the prayers are being made, you see everybody that you touched in the world come together and pray. These prayers help bring down Giygas’ defenses and do a little damage, but still, nothing can be done. Paula keeps praying, keeps wishing, but the prayers are absorbed in the dark until suddenly… Wait, is that your name there?! How the hell….? Yes, you, the player begin to pray. You join in with others and the fatal blow happens because of you. The world is saved, the four kids return to life and the journey is over.

What makes this the most inspiring? It’s because of the gameplay and the love that went into the game. When you play the game, you want them to do well, you want them to win, and while the scene could be thought of as hokey, this time it’s done well. It rings true because of everything you’ve gone through gameplay-wise, and that’s what matters when it comes to a heartfelt and inspiring moment– does it ring true? Does it make you feel something? And the final part of Earthbound, from the final battle till the final credit, does this fantastically.

And so there it is, my top ten most inspiring moments. Do you agree with my choices? Feel like I missed something? Sound off in the comments below!
