1. Mimikyu
Ghost-type Pokémon have always given fans a darker glimpse at the overall world of Pokémon. Mimikyu is no exception, with an anime backstory and a sequence in Pokémon Sun and Moon that will likely come the closest the series will ever see to survival horror. From a design standpoint, Mimikyu fits the trend of adding a “Pikachu-esque” Pokémon to newer games, while also kind of flipping the idea on its head. Pokémon such as Plusle and Dedenne have never had any in-story reasons for their similarity to the more popular electric mouse, but Mimikyu’s appearance is based on the creature’s jealous obsession. When the character was initially unveiled, fans sympathized with Mimikyu, devoting art on social media to depicting a lonely Pokémon longing to find its place. The games and anime quickly dispelled that notion, however. Mimikyu hates the more popular Pikachu, and its home in the abandoned Thrifty Megamart is covered in voyeuristic photographs of the series mascot. Mimikyu is proof that even the cutest Pokémon can be downright unnerving!
