2) Anistar City (Pokémon X/Y)
This song is so haunting and just straight up beautiful. The fact that the gym in this city is for Psychic Pokémon is not lost on me– that is a very fitting gym, especially with this theme. The sound of a ticking clock in the background also works so well. There’s a certain morbidness to a lot of this city. There’s the Memory Girl who is able to read into the minds of your Pokémon and give you their memories. Some of them are happy but there are some really upsetting ones as well. However, what really takes the cake for me is the old man, the one who is mourning the death of his wife and only wants a companion to keep him company. I remembered catching a Fletchling for him and naming her Pennywhistle. I gave it to him and then went about my way. Later on in the game, I went to check out the old man and well…afterward, I had to put my game down and just sit there, listening to the sounds of the city’s theme play in my head as I tried to fathom the situation.
