Spin is not uncommon in the world of video game journalism, especially for those with an agenda to push, but despite many positive claims about Ubisoft that have made the rounds in recent months, things continue to look bleak for the company and its workers. The latest bit of bad news to make the rounds is that 71 more staffers have been let go from the company. These workers represent the entirety of Ubisoft Halifax, which recently became unionized.

Naturally, this gotten tongues wagging, with many a pundit declaring the move to be a very intentional action by Ubisoft to skirt the freshly formed union. However, a spokesperson for Ubisoft stressed to GamesIndustry.biz that the decision came from ongoing cost-cutting efforts that began prior to Halifax’s unionization efforts. While many will likely roll their eyes at this, Ubisoft has indeed been laying off its workers for a while now, so make of the situation what you will.

And thus Ubisoft begins 2026 much as it began 2025, with a wave of layoffs. The turmoil in AAA game development continues—and we’ll continue to report on it here.
