When the Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer was revealed earlier this year, the world was collectively aghast. While every character in pop culture has seen some sort of redesign upon the leap to the big screen, Sonic’s appearance was just plain ugly. Compounding things, the trailer was bafflingly tone-deaf, boasting Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise,” rather than something fun and fast to accompany Sonic’s speed. Well, Paramount took the criticism to heart, redesigning the blue blur and releasing a new trailer to show Sonic in action.
Fans should be thankful to see that the new look hews much closer to Sonic’s classic appearance. Even better, the trailer really showcases Ben Schwartz’s take on Sonic, and the style and humor feel reminiscent of the cartoon Sonic Boom.
Time will tell if Paramount’s changes will truly effect the quality of the film, but this certainly seems to bode well! We’ll know for sure when Sonic the Hedgehog speeds into theaters February 14.
