This morning’s Nintendo Direct started with a bang, as Shigeru Miyamoto announced the upcoming Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration and the games and events that will be at its core. One of the biggest reveals is that on October 2, 2025, a two-pack of Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2 is coming to Switch.
While this will be the second appearance of Mario Galaxy on Switch — it was one of the three games featured in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars Collection — this will be the first time we’ve seen Super Mario Galaxy 2 appear on a console outside of the Wii. This has been a longtime ask from fans; Mario Galaxy 2 was critically acclaimed at its release, with some reviewers feeling that it wasn’t just as good as its incredibly well-loved predecessor, but in some ways surpassed it.
The decision to rerelease both Galaxy games is a tie-in with and a nod to next year’s Super Mario Galaxy movie from Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination, slated for release on April 3, 2026. However, Nintendo also hinted during today’s Direct that while the movie is taking some inspiration from the games, we can also expect a lot of content from across the entire Mario universe and history.
Additionally, two amiibo inspired by the Galaxy games are hitting shelves on April 2, 2026: Mario and Luma and Rosalina and Lumas. The Mario amiibo features Mario launching from a Launch Star, accompanied by Luma, while the Rosalina amiibo shows her reading from her Storybook to a trio of Lumas.

We highly recommend preordering the game, book, and amiibo, as these are all sure to be in high demand as part of this milestone anniversary Super Mario Bros. celebration.
