When developer Neverland closed its doors late last year, it left the European release of Rune Factory 4 in question. Unfortunately for fans of the popular RPG series, it appears that we now know the title has been cancelled in Europe. In a recently released statement, publisher Marvelous AQL Europe has announced that it will not bring over the highly regarded RPG.
“While Marvelous AQL has made every effort to secure the title’s release for this territory, it is, unfortunately, not possible to do so at this time,” MAQL said in its official statement. “MAQL and MAQL Europe would like to thank everyone for their support and enthusiasm for their European releases. Please look forward to announcements on new MAQL titles over the coming months.”
Considering the tone of the statement, it’s not hard to imagine that Neverland’s closure may have played a key factor in the game’s cancellation. The news is made even more disappointing considering the title’s strong performance here in the US. Rune Factory 4 released not only to strong reviews, but it also experienced the strongest sales of any game so far in the series. Rune Factory is owned by publisher MAQL, so another developer could theoretically take on the franchise, though it would seem that a future for the series is unlikely at this time.
