Sakurai Done with Smash Bros.?

There goes an old challenger?!

When it comes to blood, sweat, and tireless fan service, few can have committed as much in the past few years as Smash Bros. producer Masahiro Sakurai. The 3DS and Wii U installments of this beloved franchise have been hailed a huge success by critics and players alike, so it’s perhaps not surprising that he’s suggesting he might step away from the series.

In what appears to be a leaked interview with Game Informer, he explains his thinking:

“I can’t positively declare there won’t be [another Smash Bros. game]. With both Melee and Brawl I made those games with the thought that there wouldn’t be any more sequels. Thus, I can’t really deny the chance for another. However, as for myself, I don’t think I will be. Our intention [with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U] was to provide extra merits to the game which go far beyond the sale price. You could say that all the effort in the past to stretch out, keep pushing myself, and provide all these extra merits wound up tightening the noose around my neck in the future.”

It’s always sad when someone leaves a much beloved franchise, but players should really welcome the news. A tired, uninspired creative at the helm means we end up with Spider-Man 3 after Spider-Man 2 and no one wants that to happen to Smash Bros. Roll on new blood and here’s to the exciting next title from Sakurai.

Doesn’t he say this every time? Same with Hideo Kojima and Metal Gear. Not that I can blame either of them; both are super-talented and full of other ideas they’d love to pursue, not to mention how incredibly draining it has to be to work on projects with such scope.

Even if he does mean it, as we’ve seen with Zelda and Metroid and Donkey Kong, treasured Nintendo series can be handed off internally or externally and remain fantastic.
