While Pikachu remains the most popular Pokémon by far, few other pocket monsters have remained as enduring as Mewtwo. This year, the clone of Mew will have a prominent role in not one but two major motion pictures: the live action Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and the animated film Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. A new trailer for the former appeared earlier this week, but now a new trailer has released in Japan for the latter film.
The new trailer is certainly intriguing! Despite the new CGI animation, Evolution looks to be very faithful to the plot of Mewtwo Strikes Back. That film saw Mewtwo cloning a powerful army of Pokémon to replace all life on Earth, while Ash, Misty, Brock and even Team Rocket worked to save the day.
Misty and Brock’s inclusion in Evolution certainly seems notable. Ash’s original traveling companions made the briefest of cameos in Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You, with their original roles taken over by a new pair of characters. Some fans had assumed the animated films would follow a rebooted continuity, but the most recent film, The Power of Us, acted more as a standalone, with no direct references to the cartoon or I Choose You. It seems safe to assume, then, that The Pokémon Company intends for these animated features to simply remain accessible to all audiences, with little regards to any stricter timeline placement.
Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will arrive in Japanese theaters July 12. Stay tuned to Nintendojo for information on a worldwide release as it develops!
