When the Pokémon franchise first came to the west, it needed a catchy tagline to sell players on the catching and trading aspect of the games. While a few variants were considered, Nintendo of America eventually settled on “Gotta Catch ‘Em All!,” and the rest is history. The anime, however, has never really captured that idea, as Ash Ketchum has always kept a fairly small crew during his travels. When the Pokémon Sword and Shield anime debuts this fall, however, Ash will be joined by a new partner determined to catch every single Pokémon, particularly Mew.

The new character has a rather familiar name: in Japan, he’s known as Go, and he’ll be accompanied by the Galar starter, Scorbunny. Whether or not his name means the show will try to capture aspects of the mobile game in addition to Sword and Shield remains to be seen. That said, both Ash and Go will use phones in their quest: the Rotom phone, which takes the place of the Pokédex in the Galar region. The Galar region will only be one area the two trainers visit on their quest. According to The Pokémon Company, the pair will visit a number of previous regions, as well!

Of course, all this new info comes with plenty of questions, as well. Traditionally, Ash has been accompanied by at least two other trainers in each season; will Go be his only new friend this time around? With Ash and Go visiting previous regions in the new series, will returning faces fill the void? And how will Ash’s status as Alola’s Pokémon League Champion play into the new series?

Fans won’t have long to wait to find out. The Pokémon Sword and Shield anime is set to debut in Japan November 17. We’ll have information regarding the localization as it develops!
