Pokémon is entering its thirtieth year of existence in 2026—indeed, the precise anniversary is February 26, 2026. Not only will that be this year’s Pokémon day, but on that particular Tuesday we’ll also be seeing the rerelease of two Game Boy Advance classics for Nintendo Switch: Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen. Here’s the announcement trailer:
In case you’re wondering, no, this is not a Nintendo Switch Online addition. Instead, Nintendo (likely realizing how much money it can make off of the Pokémon series as independent releases) has opted to offer both games as single-purchase pieces of software. Owning a classic Nintendo game outright? What is this, 1995?!
All kidding aside, it is a most welcome deviation from the rental model Nintendo has been pushing the past nearly decade with Switch Online. Each game will sell for $19.99 and can also be played on Nintendo Switch 2. Both games will be available for purchase following the Pokémon Presents broadcast that will be airing on the same day.
