Zelda is always fresh on the minds of Nintendo fans, especially after the recent footage shown of the upcoming Zelda Wii U game. Evidently it is also on the minds of Nintendo’s shareholders too.

At a recent AGM meeting, a shareholder enquired for further information as to when we will learn more about the game, and Shigeru Miyamoto’s response revealed a number of interesting points about the ongoing development of the series:

“[The Legend of Zelda Wii U] will be an ‘open world,’ as announced at E3. I prefer not to use the generally used term ‘open world’ when developing software, but we used this term in order to make it easier for consumers to understand. This term means that there is a large world in which players can do numerous things daily.”

When discussing the traditional sequence of eight dungeons that make up Zelda games, Miyamoto added:

“We are trying to gradually break down such mechanism and develop a game style in which you can enjoy “The Legend of Zelda” freely in a vast world, whenever you find the time to do so.”

He describes The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds as the half way point for that goal:

“We… let the player rent different items from the beginning, so the player could use different combinations of items. In this way, we are gradually changing the structure of “The Legend of Zelda” series, and we are preparing to newly evolve the series for Wii U. In addition to that, we have ideas for Nintendo 3DS which we have not announced yet, so I hope you will look forward to them.”

It is interesting to note that there are still a number of Zelda games in development for 3DS which we have yet to be told. Of course, while new ideas are always welcome, many fans are still eagerly awaiting a Majora’s Mask remake. If Nintendo is intent on shaking up the formula for future Zelda games, we may have to keep waiting for further information on that!

I hope they take their sweet time making Zelda for Wii U. That being said, I think we will be lucky if it comes out by December, 2015.

Remember how Nintendo gave us Wind Waker HD because it would make the wait for Zelda Wii U more bearable? I wish they’d have a Nintendo direct with more info on Zelda Wii U, and then at the end announce HD versions of OoT, MM, and TP to “hold us over.”
