This morning, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company officially announced the eighth generation of Pokémon titles: Pokémon Sword and Shield! The presentation was on the shorter side, so details are fairly slim thus far, but fans did get a look at the new region and the Pokémon they’ll encounter on their newest journey!
Sword and Shield take place in the Galar region, a new area filled with vast countrysides and cities. The areas on display looked quite impressive, and there was a quality to the overworld that almost felt similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We got to see an area covered in snow, but that particular weather pattern seems to be exclusive to one area of the map, similar to Snowpoint City in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, as opposed to Black and White’s season system.
Fans also got to see the game’s three new starting Pokémon: Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble! The three Pokémon are of the Grass, Fire and Water types, respectively. No other new Pokémon were shown, but we did get to see some of the franchise’s familiar faces in the new Switch games, including Pikachu, Lucario and more.
In the coming months, we’ll have much more information regarding Pokémon Sword and Shield! In the meantime, let us know what you thought of today’s Pokémon Direct in the comments below!
