The first official, full trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie is finally here. Debuted during this week’s special Nintendo Direct broadcast dedicated to the film, the trailer offers a greater glimpse into Illumination and Nintendo’s new take on the Mushroom Kingdom and its denizens. Give it a look:
Along with Luigi and Peach being shown off, fans are also privy to a first glance at Donkey Kong. During the Direct, Shigeru Miyamoto commented how the redesign of DK is the first that the character has received since his appearance was altered for Donkey Kong Country (although Donkey Kong ’94 on Game Boy was technically that design’s debut, but I digress). DK is meant to look a little less goofy and more serious, akin to his original design in the Donkey Kong arcade game.
The trailer also reveals that Shy Guys and Snifits will be featured, along with at least cameos from the Donkey Kong supporting cast of characters, including Diddy, Dixie, Cranky, and Funky. Mario-style obstacle courses are shown off, and at the end, serving as perhaps the highlight of the whole trailer, a kart race across Rainbow Road is highlighted. It’s a ton of fan service. The question remains as to how endearing the story and performances will be, but at least so far there’s plenty to be excited for when it comes to The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
