Nintendo, despite having been in the video game business for a few decades now, still manages to surprise fans. From Alarmo to whole them park attractions, the company continues to expand in different, sometimes unexpected directions, and earlier today fans got yet another surprise reveal to debate. This time it was a short animation dubbed Close to You, which first bowed on the Nintendo Today! app before making the rounds on the rest of Nintendo’s social channels—take a look:
As you can see in the video, this is a decidedly Nintendo IP-free animation. The baby is central throughout as invisible forces manipulate things in the room, most prominently the baby’s pacifier. Although it’s never explicitly stated that this short is Pikmin related, the vibe of the small items being moved by even smaller beings is very suggestive of the series’ nominal creatures. There’s also a moment at the 1:38 mark where a blurred out… something is clearly walking around in the background.
So now the question is, was this a glimpse at some new Pikmin game or spinoff? Something else entirely? The last time Nintendo did something like this was prior to the unveiling of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club back in July of 2024. Might something similar happen this time around? Your guess is as good as ours—share with us down in the comments!
