Last week, Nintendo announced that its plans for E3 2015 included a return of the Nintendo World Championships after 25 years! Today, we now have more information on the event, including the game that will be played and how to enter the event.
On May 30, Nintendo will be holding qualifying events at Best Buy locations in the following cities:
- San Francisco, CA (1717 Harrison St.)
- Torrance, CA (3675 Pacific Coast Highway)
- Miami, FL (10760 NW 17th St.)
- Schaumburg, IL (900 E. Golf Road)
- Maple Grove, MN (12905 Elm Creek Blvd. N)
- Long Island City, NY (5011 Northern Blvd.)
- Dallas, TX (9378 N Central Expy)
- Tacoma, WA (2214 S. 48th St.)
The first 750 people in line will be eligible to compete in the event. Competitors will play Championship Mode on NES Ultimate Remix for Nintendo 3DS, and the highest scorer from each event will be invited to E3 2015 to play in the big event on June 14. However, the big event may or may not be Ultimate NES Remix… In the press release Nintendo stated the following:
“The qualifying competition will feature the Championship mode of the Ultimate NES Remix game for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. In this mode, players will take on a series of three score-based challenges in Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3 and Dr. Mario. Games and systems will be provided at each location, although Ultimate NES Remix is available now in stores and in the Nintendo eShop for anyone who wants to start practicing for the competition. The top scorer from each of the eight regional competitions will move on to the final event in Los Angeles, which will be a multi-round competition with a variety of Nintendo games. An additional eight competitors selected by Nintendo will also compete in the Nintendo World Championships 2015. Nintendo will reveal these competitors in the near future.”

I formally request that media outlets stop calling it the Nintendo World Championships and start calling it what it actually is: the Nintendo United-States-Only-But-Only-If-You-Live-In-These-Specifc-Regions Championships.
Yep, basically. The original “World” Championships were only in the USA as well. It’s a bit like Major League Baseball holding calling their championships the “World Series” in a league that is comprised of teams from only the US and Canada.
