With the age of the spiritual successor now in full swing, fans of old-school arcade racing games also have an upcoming title to look forward to. The ’90s Arcade Racer is that title, and the name should give you a pretty good hint at what to expect when it drifts on to Wii U later this year!
Like so many other titles of late, The ’90s Arcade Racer was funded through Kickstarter. Developed by Pelikan13, the title promises to capture the spirit of classic ’90s arcade racing games, such as Cruis’n USA and Virtua Racing. While racing games have gotten quite a bit more elaborate throughout the last few console generations, some fans have clamored for the simplicity of those older racers, and this looks like it will deliver just that! The game will feature nine tracks: Oval, Oval Infield, Island Short, Island Long, Mountain Short, Mountain Long, Airport, VR (inspired by Virtua Racer) and Playroom (which looks reminiscent of Ribbon Road from Mario Kart 8). You can take a look at some of these tracks in the video mirrored below!
The video shows a couple of neat details from the game. The Playroom track is meant to look like a toy slot car set in a bedroom in the ’90s. Our readers that grew up during that time will certainly recognize the era-faithful recreations of a television set, a stereo system and even an NES that litter the room. Even more interesting is the arcade cabinet, which allows players to check out a mini game called Pop Dat, inspired by Capcom’s Buster Bros.! It seems like an odd addition, but it will certainly add to the game’s replay value!
