It seems the 3DS has had another stellar week in Japan, as the handheld finds itself yet again sitting atop the region’s hardware sales by an impressive margin.
According to the latest figures from Media Create, Nintendo shifted 187,077 3DS consoles in Japan last week, selling over four times as many units as the rest of the platforms combined, and bringing the system’s lifetime sales in the region to just over 8 million. For reference, Sony’s PlayStation 3 is currently sitting at 8,598,255 consoles sold, despite launching some four years before Nintendo’s handheld. At this rate, the 3DS could very well clear the PS3’s lifetime sales before the end of the year.
Always appropriate.
Speaking of Sony consoles, the Vita continues to stumble in its homeland, moving just over 4,000 units during the same time frame. For the mathematically inclined, this means the 3DS outsold the Vita by a ratio of 46:1 last week. If that isn’t a spanking, I don’t know what is.
It’s safe to assume these strong numbers are due in no small part to the release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which sold an impressive 600,000 copies (on top of 200,000 digital downloads from the eShop) in its first week of sale. The title was so popular, in fact, that it quickly sold out in stores around the country, prompting Iwata himself to announce, via Twitter, that another shipment of 300,000 games would be arriving in the next few days.
The hardware sales, along with the top ten software sales for the week, have been included below. The full sales breakdown can be found at the link at the bottom of the page.

46:1 ouch!
Unlike Nintendo did with the 3DS, Sony isn’t doing anything to try to pick up sales for the Vita. I’m happy I became a big Nintendo fan since 1981, and a exclusive one!
So now the question is: when the 4DS and PS_ are coming out, will the media and gamers continue to predict Sony obliterating Nintendo and their “underpowered” devices? =P
DS > PSP
3DS > PSV
4DS ? PS_
