For old-school gamers, the Mario and Sonic Olympic franchise is still rather surreal. The two industry titans were once the greatest of rivals, and now both character families regularly share video game installments with one another. This fall, the latest entry will see release, in the form of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Unsurprisingly, the game will feature plenty of new additions, but the most interesting is certainly 2D Events. There will be 10 2D events in total, and Sega has released a brand-new trailer showcasing some of them in action.

Surreal to say the least. Sonic and friends look a bit more modern compared to Mario’s crew, given the fact that Super Mario Bros. debuted six years prior to Sonic the Hedgehog. By that token, sprites from Super Mario World might have been a better choice, but it’s still pretty amazing, regardless!
