The Angry Birds series has been one of the most successful franchises in recent history, but it has never attempted direct competitive or cooperative play. That is going to change later this year when Angry Birds: Star Wars is released on consoles on October 29.
A trailer released for the game at Gamescom in Germany shows off two new modes that allow players to compete against one another or work together to topple the evil pigs’ galactic empire. Both modes appear to keep the same core mechanics of the main game, with players alternating turns, either trying to best the other player’s scores or to tackle the same stage together. Unfortunately, nothing more specific has really been revealed at this point.
All things considered, I hadn’t even realized that the series never had mulitplayer until this point; the game always seemed so perfect for having players pass a phone or tablet around to take turns that I just kind of assumed it was there without ever bothering to look. Oh well, I guess we’ll all get the opportunity to experience that now when the game launches on Wii, Wii U, and 3DS.
