During its Monster Hunter Fest event this weekend, Capcom unveiled a brand new Monster Hunter role-playing game for the Nintendo 3DS family: Monster Hunter Stories.
Unlike previous entries in the Monster Hunter series, Stories casts players not in the role of an aspiring hunter, but as a monster rider, who can be seen riding a stylized Rathalos in the game’s debut trailer. Along with this shift in premise, Stories also sports a completely different art style from the main series, with cuter, anime-inspired visuals and character designs. Gameplay details are scarce at the moment, but according to Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, Stories will offer “a new kind of excitement that is different from the conventional series,” while “staying true to the world of Monster Hunter.” You can watch the full debut trailer below.
Monster Hunter Stories will be launching in Japan sometime in 2016. What do you think of Capcom’s Monster Hunter spin-off? Sound off in the comments!

Hmm. I like RPGs and I like Monster Hunter. But the art style was… maybe *too* cute?
It felt like the game was targeting a younger audience (which is perfectly ok) so I’m going to wait for more information before getting excited. That said, my kids thought this looked absolutely incredible.
Here’s hoping this game is a really cool genre cross-over for the series!
