Often, fans will debate the casting of actors in different roles in the various movie adaptations that Hollywood produces. Heath Ledger as Joker? Tom Holland as Spider-Man? Fans ask whether or not an actor is a good fit and take to the Internet for some good-natured (okay, not always) discourse. Every once in a while, however, the casting just seems to hit all the right checkboxes, and in this case, all indicators seem affirm that Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog can only be a good thing.
The news came from The Hollywood Reporter that Reeves will be taking on the voice acting duties of Sonic’s dark rival (who has been teased since the end of the Sonic 2) in the upcoming film Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Many fans had been hoping that the John Wick and Matrix actor might be the one to fill the role, as Reeves’ voice seems perfectly suited to Shadow’s somber demeanor. As a whole, the Sonic movie franchise has done a wonderful job of going out of its way to please fans, dating back to the original film entirely scrapping the hideous version of the Blue Blur that was going to be used just to make everyone happy.
Is the casting of Reeves just fortuitous or were SEGA and Paramount listening to fans? We’ll likely never know, but what we will soon learn is whether or not this collaboration will pay off in a good movie—Sonic 3 hits theaters on December 20, 2024. It recently wrapped filming, and SEGA also recently announced that 2024 is the Year of Shadow. With Sonic Generations X Shadow coming to Switch this fall, along with Sonic 3 following soon after, it’s quite the time to be alive for Shadow fans.
