Earlier this week, The Pokémon Company revealed a handful of new creatures appearing in Pokémon Sword and Shield. New Galarian forms for Weezing and Zigzagoon were shown off for the very first time, with the latter getting a brand-new final evolution named Obstagoon. Naturally, the internet had some things to say about the latest creatures, and a number of fans pointed out Obstagoon’s similarity to the rock band KISS. Apparently, even Gene Simmons has taken notice. In a statement to Newsweek, the KISS frontman approved of the new design.
“Pokémon has been a part of our household for decades, ever since our kids first discovered them. And to see Pokémon pay homage to KISS, is flattering.”
Of course, it’s highly unlikely we’ll ever get any confirmation whether or not Obstagoon is based on the band; The Pokémon Company tends to be notoriously tight-lipped on that sort of thing. Still, we’ll probably see a number of Obstagoon with KISS based nicknames when Pokémon Sword and Shield release later this year. It’s nice to know Gene Simmons would approve.
Pokémon Sword and Shield will release worldwide November 15.
