Many years ago, a Metroid movie seemed all but certain with acclaimed director John Woo set to bring the space faring adventures of Samus Aran to the silver screen. Obviously, those films fell apart and those of us with equal loves for films and video games were left having to rewatch the amazingly horrible and ill-conceived Super Mario Bros. movie. Thankfully, we live in a day where small groups of people can produce high quality films and release them to an audience of millions thanks to advances in technology and a little thing called the Internet.
Rainfall Films is one such small group; experienced, skilled, and obviously passionate about giving due respect to the Metroid franchise. Written and directed by Sam Balcomb and starring Jessica Chobot as Samus, Metroid: The Sky Calls is an amazingly well produced short film that is, without a doubt, one of the most compelling looks at what a Metroid movie could look like. Fans of cinema will undoubtedly recognizing plenty of stylistic choices from classic science fiction films, with the description citing “2001, Alien, and Solaris” as inspirations.
One could only hope that this won’t be the end of the concept; the look, feel, and even sound of the production are spot on and the story definitely leaves off with plenty of places to go, both in terms of plot and location. Check out the film and let us know what you think.

I watched it twice, and all I could think was “what the hell was that all about?”
