The recent indie boom has proven to be a godsend for fans of tragically neglected genres, as developers have exploited their freedom to explore the niche interests of the gaming world. One title to find success based on this model is Dragon Fantasy: Book 1, a game inspired by classic 8-bit JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. The game found its way to numerous platforms and managed to sell well enough to lead to a sequel, Dragon Fantasy: Book 2, which draws its aesthetics from 16-bit JRPGs. The developer of the franchise, Muteki Corporation, has now unveiled that Nintendo gamers will also get to indulge in its nostalgia-fueled adventures when the studio bring both titles to 3DS.

Though both games have been confirmed for 3DS, Muteki has only gone into depth on Book 1. The most obvious change the studio has announced is how the game will use the handheld’s dual screens. When exploring the world, the bottom screen will serve as an ever present map, and in battle the lower screen will be used for menus, allowing the upper screen to display the turn-based encounters with less onscreen clutter. Other tweaks include a Mode-7 overworld map that will take advantage of the system’s 3D display and the option to turn off random battles and have enemies be visible in the world.

Muteki is aiming for a spring release for Dragon Fantasy: Book 1 and will have details on Book 2‘s 3DS conversion at a later date.
