Koichi Hayashida, producer of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and key figure in the Super Mario games at EAD, has recently revealed in an interview that he would love for the character of Captain Toad to start branching out into other games. He has hopes of continuing to use the character moving forward in whatever way possible. Mario Kart was specifically named as one of the games he’d love to see Captain Toad in, as that’s where all the cool cats are these days:
I personally want to see him featured in a variety of games. I’ve even ‘secretly’ emailed the director of Mario Kart to see if he’d consider including Captain Toad, but I haven’t heard back from him yet!
Koichi Hayashida probably has quite the attachment to Captain Toad, having had a large part in every game the inscrutable mushroom guy appears in. Hayashida was the level designer director for Super Mario Galaxy and director of Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario 3D World. Truly a Mario renaissance man.
Treasure Tracker director Shinya Hiratake also weighed in on the appeal of the stalwart toad:
Through the development of this game I’ve grown even fonder of Captain Toad. he can’t jump, and struggles to defeat his opponents, but it’s precisely that he is not a powerful character that he can show us his unique take on all these situations. as a developer of his game, and one of his fans, I look forward to seeing where he goes next.
Wherever Captain Toad ends up, he’d better be brave and ready for adventure as always. Where would you like to see Captain Toad pop up next?
